Philadelphia Phillies

One of the sorriest franchises in the history of sports. I became a Phillies fan when they were among the best teams in baseball, idolizing Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton when I was growing up.

The State of MLB

Major league baseball is a mess. No commissioner, no leadership, nothing. I hope the Phillies win it all this year, because I occasionally see they are in the hunt for the abomination known as the wild-card. I used to watch several baseball games every week. I haven't watched a complete game since I remember. The neverending All-Star game was the final straw. If I wanted whiny babies and ties, I would watch soccer.

World Series Champions

1980 (Yeah, 120 years and one lousy ring.)

MY ALL TIME PHILLIES TEAM:

It's amazing how the worst team in baseball history can produce the best 3b and among the best LH and RH starters. It's also amazing how a 120 year old franchise cannot produce a better 2b combination than Morandini and Cash.

LINES COMPOSED IN EXALTATION OVER THE NORTH ATLANTIC

James Michener

from "The Armchair Book of Baseball," Thorn (ed.), Macmillan Publishing, 1985, p. 217-8.

"When they launched their quest in the play-offs, the Phillies, always a team of infinite class, asked the city's revered musician, Eugene Ormandy, to throw out the ball for the first game, and a local scribbler to start the second.

"Ormandy won his game, I lost mine, proving that the piccolo is mightier than the Smith-Corona. The flawless artistry displayed by the Phils in the series was due in large part to this graceful beginning.

"While flying to Bangkok during the World Series, I was prompted to scribble a verse on hearing the pilot announce, 'The Phillies won.'

"Crash the cymbals, blare the trumpets,
Wreath their noble brows with laurel.
Heap the festive board with floral.
They deserve the fairest lilies
- Who? The Phillies.

"Through the long dark years they stumbled
Scarred with deep humiliations
But our cheering never crumbled
And we kept our expectations.
"Yes, we loved them for their sillies
- Who? The Phillies.

"Triple plays that did not triple,
Strikeouts with the bases loaded.
Pitchers serving up the cripple,
All again our hopes exploded.
Are they not a bunch of dillies?
Who? The Phillies.

"Far behind in early innings,
Doomed to tragedy eternal,
They turn losses into winnings
Through some holy fire internal.
They give enemies the willies -
Who? The Phillies.

"Bang the drum and toot the oboes,
Dance until the earth has shaken.
Cheer, for our beloved hoboes
Have at last brought home the bacon.

"Garland them with timeless lillies!
Athough they are a bunch of dillies
Who give honest men the willies.
We still love them for their sillies
- Hail, The Phillies.

-James Michener -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UNTITLED (A Tribute to Richie Ashburn)

Harry Kalas

"His Cornhusker roots have served him well
The dry wit, the humor, you can immediately tell
But the enduring traits we readily see
his human compassion and love of family
The greatest tribute to an athlete and man
Is, that in whatever pursuit, he did the best that he can
His charitable efforts in memory of (daughter) Jan
remind us how fragile is one's lifespan
Will we ever forget that August in '95
When thousands took that wonderful drive
to Cooperstown, the home of the Hall
an emotional time for us all
When his "Whiteness" got his just due
we were not surprised, because we knew
At Cooperstown on this August day
they honored a man who's a Hall of Famer in every way
When Whitey turned seventy a pipe or hat I did not send
but rather my lifelong loyalty, as a true friend
And now the man all Phillyland loved
has gone to join Jan in the heavens above
Don Richie Ashburn by any measure
was a man whose memory we will forever treasure."
